Making Nature School on 10 Acres: Why, How, WOW!

Making Nature School on 10 Acres: Why, How, WOW!

Introducing:
Collinmore Farms & The Li'l Farmer Program

“Kids don’t know where food comes from anymore. We need to change that.”

That is Deanne. She grew up on the same 10-acre property she lives on today. It’s called Collinmore Farms and it’s a very special place with a crazy story.

In her life, Deanne saw her family’s farm go from being an orchard, to hay fields, to feed-lot, to pasture!

Now she’s ready for it to become something entirely different.

Deanne’s dream for years was to turn the land into a demo farm of regeneration, a hub of education, a place of health in all aspects of the word.

And what will she grow?
Young minds.

She dubbed it the “
Li’l Farmers Program”.

A place where kids can learn how to grow food, care for animals, get their hands dirty, and reconnect with the land;

A place that can model what regenerative farming and Permaculture look like when centered around growing children.

And that is where our story begins.

MEETING & "THE WHY"

I first met Deanne in the spring of 2026 in Kelowna at a weekend workshop I was teaching called “Grow By Design”.

In a single weekend, I taught her how to apply Permaculture to design a property, survey land, master water, and begin putting together a demonstration farm.

And it completely opened her eyes to what her own property might become.

Deanne already had a great start.
She already had:

  • 10 acres, 2 farm helpers, and a shop
  • Sheep, chickens, a budding food forest
  • Business experience! A website!
  • Programs already being piloted!
  • But more than anything else, Deanne has a big vision for where this could go

After taking a Permaculture weekend workshop, she could see the possibilities to apply more Permaculture to her farm.

So she hired her teacher as her Permaculture consultant to help.

The task ahead? To make a Permaculture demonstration farm for teaching the new generation…

… because kids should be connected to nature and to food.

(Below is an image of the pre-existing site).

Seeing The Land Differently

I arrived for a long day on the property with my surveying equipment in tow.

Before talking about ponds, chickens, farm stands, or gardens, I wanted Deanne to understand the watershed;

Water is the most important thing to plan around when designing any property.

So we set up the laser level and began placing flags across the hillside.

Each coloured line of flags = a contour line… Now we could walk the watershed with the data at our feet.

As we worked our way across the property, each line of flags continued to make both of us go “Ohhhhhhhh!” and “Interesting…“

That is one of the reasons I love teaching clients how to survey – finally they get to see, understand, and feel their watershed.

Not as lines on a computer screen…
… as lines right beneath their feet.

Suddenly, the hillside started telling us where water wanted to move, where access could go, and where trees, growing systems, and everything else could not just “fit”, but WORK.

(Below is an image of 2 sets of data. The white lines are “free contour data” we found online. The teal lines are what we surveyed with 1-2 cm of accuracy. HUGE DIFFERENCE.)

Making Everything Work Together With Less Work

The biggest opportunity on Deanne’s property was not adding more stuff. (She already had enough to do.)

What she needed was a design that made the pieces work better together.
Smarter. Less work. More productivity.

So one of my first recommendations was a road that followed the ridgeline of the sloped land. Why?

The road provides a central access line to divide up the property into rotational pastures, different microclimates, and complementary functions.

And because the road follows the ridge, it will always shed its water onto the neighbouring swales, fruit trees, & pastures. In doing so, the road remains dry and is less vulnerable to washout.

This is classical Permaculture design thinking to turn a problem into a solution.
Water problems? Water solutions!

Each element does several jobs. And ideally, elements support each other.

Let’s take the top of the property as another example. I proposed four features there that all worked together:

  1. A viewing patio overlooking the farm (A striking view and contrast between a monoculture orchard, a corn maze, and then Deanne’s budding farm.)

  2. A chicken + compost system designed to produce incredibly nutrient-rich eggs, high-value soil, and be a fertility factory for the whole property. Using the chickens’ scratching behaviour, these hardworking birds will turn the compost and push it all downhill, where it can both passively fertilize everything downhill or be harvested. Essentially, this is gravity composting. As Permaculture would teach, “Get other creatures to do all the work.”
  3. A high pond designed to be the ultimate value location for water. This is an investment in life itself – it holds high-pressure, high-value water for animals, fire, drought, and all d’em chickens. We stack functions by farming a superfood for chickens called “duckweed” on the water’s surface. It’s a free, high-protein, high-nutrition, natural, local chicken feed. The duckweed thrives in the nutrient-rich waters… like the ones near chickens and compost.
  4. A farm stand connected directly to the residential neighbourhood above – residents can walk down in the morning and get their fresh eggs as if they owned the chickens themselves.

Individually, each of these ideas is useful.
Together, they become beyond efficient.
They stack functions & gain resilience.
.
This is Permaculture design.

And as the farm grows, the patio can become a gathering place for Li’l Farmers, workshops, tours, or events.

And all of it becomes the demonstration farm Deanne wants to share not just with kids, but with the world.

(Below is an “electronic sketch” I made with the client during the consult using Google Earth Pro. This is not a finished design.)

Existing Proposed

Just The Beginning...
Want To Begin Too?

This project is still in its early days.

Deanne has just started piloting her kids programs and is starting to do the install piece by piece. Over the coming years, we get to watch this property take shape.

But why just watch? Has this got you wondering what your property could become?

Whether your dream is a productive acreage, a family food forest, or a school for kids, every successful project begins with good design.
